Mario Kart fans have finally gotten an official update for Wave 2 of the upcoming DLC, which is now scheduled to release on August 4th, 2022. The DLC can be purchased separately, but it will be free to download for Nintendo Switch Online and Expansion Pack members.
Here’s the new announcement from Nintendo of America’s Twitter feed:
Four more waves are expected to roll out “by the end of 2023”, effectively dashing all hopes of any sequel news. Instead, fans should mainly expect recycled courses. And although the trailer counts 48, they’ve neglected to mention that 16 of the courses have already been released. Only 32 courses remain.
Fans have been very disappointed that the sheer success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has created no incentive for Nintendo to develop a sequel, with most players relying on mobile title Mario Kart Tour for new content. However, the DLC has been widely successful anyways, and at least it’s better than nothing.
8 new courses will be added again. Firstly, there’s Sky-High Sundae, a course filled with food-themed obstacles and tracks that might satiate Kirby fans until the release of Kirby’s Dream Buffet.
Next up are some classics, like the N64 Kalimari Desert, SNES Mario Circuit 3, Wii Mushroom Gorge and GBA Snow Land. It was surprisingly easy to get lost in Kalimari Desert, but it’s definitely great nostalgia bait, just like the others. Meanwhile, Mario Kart Tour fans will finally get the modern tracks “Sydney Sprint” and “New York Minute” on console.
But the biggest surprise is undoubtedly the DS Waluigi Pinball course, which has a very unique design and iconic track. The best comparison is Casino Park from Sonic’s own franchise, but the pinball elements are incorporated well.
