Sonic Frontiers prologue animation and digital comic coming soon

Sonic the Hedgehog fans will soon get a glimpse of two prologues for the upcoming open-world adventure Sonic Frontiers, according to a new announcement today. It’s unclear when the animation will premiere. But the two-part digital comic, titled “Convergence”, is due to release on Tuesday, October 18th, 2022. It can viewed on Sonic the Hedgehog’s Twitter feed:

The cover of the prequel comic looks to focus on Sonic, Amy, Tails, and the beloved villain Robotnik. The artwork perfectly captures the distinct personality of each character, including Sonic’s signature grin. Amy fans have been frustrated that she hasn’t gotten much storytelling lately, so it’s definitely a relief to see her on the front page of a crucial prologue.

It remains to be seen if the prequel story will actually be elaborated on in Sonic Frontiers’ campaign. There has been plenty of other prequel or prologue material that just never made it into the game.

Also, many players get concerned when a game relies on outside storytelling. Since Sonic Frontiers is adding an open-world element, it’s a great opportunity to add more lore to the franchise. The genre often allows players to discover. This will hopefully include nods to the prequel and prologue stories.

The animated prologue still doesn’t have a release date, at this time. But Sonic Frontiers is scheduled to release on November 8th, 2022, so it should be expected pretty soon. The comic will be a two-part story, so the animation could tie in with the comic finale, or immediately follow it, depending on the release format of the comic.

Fans expect the animation to focus on Knuckles, as well as other characters, which would already be covered in the digital comic. Altogether, the effort to prepare fans for Sonic Frontiers is much appreciated.

Ideally, the prequels will set up a worthwhile story. Sonic Frontiers has seen a lot of ups and downs, with early backlash for its combat system, and won over some after showing off Super Sonic.
