The Callisto Protocol has been blocked by the Japanese ratings board

The Callisto Protocol has been canceled in Japan after it has been rated by CERO.

The Callisto Protocol is an upcoming survival horror video game developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton. After being directed by Glen Schofield, The Callisto Protocol was seen as a spiritual successor to the critically acclaimed video game Dead Space.

The events of The Callisto Protocol take place in the year 2320 on the moon of Jupiter known as Black Iron, which is a penal colony run by the United Jupiter Company. The player takes on the role of Jacob Lee, a man imprisoned in Black Iron. They soon discover that they are in the middle of an extraterrestrial invasion that seems to have been planned by the prison’s warden.

The Computer Entertainment Rating Organization Video Game Rating System (CERO) of Japan is stringent with its regulations, and The Callisto Protocol was not exempt from this. The Japanese version of Resident Evil 2 Remake and other Triple-A titles had to cut some scenes to satisfy CERO’s requirement as a result.

Meanwhile, reviewers described The Callisto Protocol as “gross” and “visceral.” However, the level of gore may be excessive for Japan due to the fact that the CERO has stricter limits on depictions of violence. Since the developers of The Callisto Protocol are unwilling to compromise the experience that gamers demand, the Japanese rating board eventually decided to block the game from being distributed in the country.

Recently, the official Twitter account of The Callisto Protocol Japan issued a statement in Japanese, confirming the cancellation of the game’s release in the country. The post’s verified translation is as follows:

“The Callisto Protocol has decided to stop the release of the Japanese version. As of now, the CERO rating cannot be passed. We have decided that we would no longer be able to provide you with the experience you need. We hope everyone in Japan will understand. If you have already pre-ordered, we will refund you.”
