Set between 1914 and 1919, players will choose to support either the Allied Nations or Central Powers, and direct enemies through turn-based combat as a commander. While there are countless war games that strive for authenticity as a primary selling point, this one has some unique qualities.
The game is being developed by Frontier Foundry, a publishing arm of Frontier Developments that recently championed the remarkable indie FAR: Changing Tides, and the promising Deliver Us Mars. The Great War: Western Front marks a very different genre for them, so something special must have caught their attention.
The signature mechanic of this RTS title is the dual-role responsibility. Players must succeed as both the Theatre Commander and Field Commander, who have different tasks. This pushes the game closer to more complex games while retaining the tabletop charm.
Also, the game boasts a living world, which includes weather, consistent morale gauges, and remembers the physical results of each battle. Where many games would simply reset, these features should create a unique kind of realism.
Players will get an actual campaign mode too, so it isn’t just going to be scenario-based like most war games (although scenarios are also available). There will also be multiplayer, so that commanders can compete.
This game has all of the investment and complexity of a living board game, without the board. Fans of Command & Conquer should definitely be pleased, and it’s from the same devs.
