The Sims 4 base game will become Free in October 2022

The Sims has officially revealed that the base game for the fourth installment will go free-to-play on October 18th, 2022.

The news comes alongside the devs’ announcement for an upcoming stream on the same day, promising even more updates and behind-the-scenes details. Fans of the series can tune in to The Sims’ YouTube and Twitch channels at 10 AM pacific time.

According to the Twitter account, The Sims 4 will be available for free on both PC and consoles:

Longtime fans of The Sims 4 were none too pleased to hear that the pricey game would become free next month. Many players ended up requesting refunds, with an equal share of joking and frustration.

While this does feel very understandable, none of the additional content will be made available. And besides, the original game was released as far back as 2014, so it has been several years.

There have been more than a few games that moved over to Game Pass, or became free-to-play, much sooner than that. Aside from smaller games like Fall Guys, even giant titles like Destiny made the controversial move.

In fact, some fans noted that establishing a base game and selecting which DLC to populate it with could be a superior business model for the series anyway. To soften the blow, the devs are also offering current owners of the base game a Desert Luxe Kit inspired by Southwestern deserts, which can be redeemed until October 17th, 2022.

The Sims may not have a monopoly on its genre, but it certainly excels in it, and has retained a very large fanbase. Since the base game will become available on the same day as the October stream, it’ll be interesting to see how much the “updates” elaborate on the future of the franchise.
