Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider announced for Fall 2022

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, a retro sci-fi platformer, has gotten an official announcement trailer revealing both the story’s premise and key gameplay. The title will release on PlayStation some time in Fall 2022, with no exact release date confirmed.

You can watch the brief new trailer for Vengeful Guardian on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel here:

Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider was developed by JoyMasher, a small team from Brazil. It was founded in 2012 by Danilo Dias and Thais Weiller. After releasing their earliest games on Steam, the stage was set for Blazing Chrome, the post-apocalyptic run-and-gun that really put JoyMasher on the map.

All of JoyMasher’s titles have been love letters to retro games, proudly and cleverly taking everything that worked from these influences to create something equally fun. Vengeful Guardian is aiming for the 90’s style of gaming.

According to the interview with Dias in today’s PlayStation blog, a lot of the artistic approach to the game was “inspired by Japanese artist Keita Amemiya” and H.R. Giger of Alien fame.

As a result, the story in the trailer begins with terrorists being gunned down by police, and also features a wide variety of dark imagery. There’s a lot of machinery and biomechanical designs in the revealed gameplay, with lots of red, black and steel.

It makes a very distinguishable style from JoyMasher’s previous games, while continuing to deliver what fans have come to expect from the team. For example, the music is definitely successful nostalgia bait. Players will need to scale vertical levels, and complete a variety of platforming while also battling enemies.

Vengeful Guardian will have the same publisher as Blazing Chrome, The Arcade Crew, who recently published the action-adventure game Infernax last February.
